XChat makes the most sense when you view it as part of Musk's broader attempt to turn X into a Western-style super app. He has repeatedly said that he wants X to combine social media, payments, and messaging, with WeChat often serving as the comparison point. XChat is the messaging layer of that vision, turning what used to be DMs into a fuller product with end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, voice and video calling, and AI integration.

If you simply want to verify the official app, the fastest check is the developer name in the App Store. If it says X Corp., you are looking at the real one.
