Why Does XChat Require iOS 26?
XChat requires iOS 26.0 or iPadOS 26.0 at a minimum. Older systems cannot run it. X Corp. has not publicly explained why, but a few engineering reasons stand out.
First, XChat appears to have been rebuilt around a newer Rust-based communications stack. If the app is meant to rely heavily on newer OS-level isolation and security features, such as Secure Enclave support, targeting iOS 26 makes sense. Second, end-to-end encryption plus real-time voice and video features put more pressure on permissions and device security, both of which are stronger in newer iOS releases.
From a user standpoint, this may not be a major barrier for newer hardware. iOS 26 shipped in fall 2025, and most mainstream iPhones from the iPhone 12 era onward should be able to upgrade. If your device cannot move to iOS 26, it is probably old enough that it simply falls outside XChat's supported range.
Right now there is no sign that X Corp. plans to backport support to older iOS versions anytime soon.
